Well, I haven't heard from Hohenheim for quite a bit. Haven't seen him around either, so I guess that means he went home. Same goes for....for Mom. Seems like quite a few people from home are leaving.

[His voice is quiet, but those close to him would be able to read into it. How bitter he was, how much he was refraining from losing it. He'd already had some dents punched into his walls after discovering Al and Winry had gone. He was just sort of starting to accept that Hohenheim was here and all, and just getting used to having Trisha around. It had potentially been a while since they had actually left, but Ed had been pretty distracted lately and all. The hardest part was knowing he would never get that chance to see Trisha again, at least not back home.]

Also, given Winry left and so did Varon, I think, I don't suppose there is any mechanics out there willing to check on my auto-mail? I prefer having Winry do the repairs and maintenance, but if she isn't here, I still need some back up in case it gets damaged somehow.

[Really, he has been pretty good about not breaking it thus far. But who knows how long that would last for.]

[ reading the grief in his brother's voice is as easy as breathing and he knows just how much it hurts. no matter how many times they lose someone important to them, it never gets easier. and though he hadn't even had the chance to speak with their father, it still pains him to think he'll never get the chance to say goodbye. which is why the message he makes is brief, already heading towards where Ed is. ]

Brother... I'll be there soon.

Okay, Al. I'm just at the Outpost. Door's unlocked.

[And he knows, expected that Al would come looking for him. Knows Al would be just as upset. He's not planning on hiding from him, Al is probably the only one he can really talk to about any of this.]

[ it doesn't take him long to reach the Outpost, quietly slipping inside and grateful (yet again) that he doesn't have as large of body as he used to. it makes things easier, especially as he crosses the room and settles down next to his brother. his head bows as he tries to come up with words to console his brother, but with his own heart hurting, words don't come. and just as grateful as he'd been that he didn't have a large body that would clank with each step, he regrets that he can no longer scoop up his brother as he once did, and cradle him when he's hurt. ]

Does it hurt?

[Curled up on his bed, looking up and shifting slightly when Al enters. It's painful enough having lost Trisha years ago, but to see her here again, and have her leave, it still hurts just as much if not more. His head bows slightly, bangs covering most of his face.]

Yeah. I never even expected for Mom to show up. Hohenheim was brought here from before Xerxes was destroyed, so there was a lot of explaining there. Figures the bastard would take off, it's no different than back home.

[Even if he understands Hohenheim had had his reason for leaving, trying to save Amestris, it still hurt. Was still a raw ache and bitterness. Even more bitter considering Trisha. It felt like she had barely arrived at all and she was gone. Winry having gone was also likely not helping Ed's growing bitterness and cynicism towards Anatole, as grateful as he was for having Al back and human.]

[ with a quiet sigh, Al scoots closer to his brother, and after a few seconds deliberation, he leans over to wrap him in a hug. for Ed, he figures, it's even harder dealing with this loss because unlike him, Ed had the chance to see their mother again. as well as the smile that led them down the path of taboo. inwardly, he's a tad bit jealous that his brother had that chance, but the thought is quickly shoved aside because then, he'd hurt as much as Ed hurts now.

and of course, his brother brings up their father, whom Ed has had a grudge towards for such a long time that his comment comes as no surprise. instead, he makes a low noise in his throat. ]

It was always to protect us, Brother. And— And maybe it's for the best that Mom went home. Maybe... Mm. I'm sorry.

[Ed leans into the hug, knowing this would be hard on Al too, even if his brother missed actually reuniting with his parents in person here. His own arms wrap loosely around Al's waist, inwardly marvelling and savoring the fact he could hug his younger brother again like this. It had been years.]

I know he did it to protect us, to stop Father and save Amestris, but we never even got one lousy letter! No word from him at all for years. As for Mom....I guess I should be lucky I got to see her again at all. I'm sorry you didn't get to see them, Al.

[He knows Al would have liked to see them again. The desire to see Trisha smile again had been the start of everything, and he wishes Al could have seen it again, at least this one chance and time. But he also figures with the way things worked out with the differences in how the homunculi were created for Al, she would have been one of them.]

[ giving Ed a slight squeeze, he rests his chin on Ed's shoulder. the rant is one he's heard before, many times, and it seems no different for this Ed. he remains silent as Ed goes through it, allowing him the chance to get it all out before finally responding. ]

It's okay, Brother. I'm glad you did. [ it had been Ed's idea to bring back their mom in the first place, and though he went along with it, he suspects his desire to see their mother's smile was trumped by Ed's. ] As for Dad... I'm sure he had his reasons. Sometimes we were just as bad about sending letters to Winry and Granny Pinako.

I guess. But still, I wish you could have seen her again too. We weren't the best keeping in touch but we still called Winry and went to see them when I needed repairs, at least.

[He understands Hohenheim's reasons, but that still doesn't entirely take all the bitterness away. Trisha had died waiting for him to come back. Ed and Al had not even known if he was even alive until they had reunited with him about ten years later. Ed is still not entirely sure what to make of just how similar he is to his father when he was younger, really.]

Mm. I know. It... it would've been nice. To see Mom again.

[ the words are accompanied by another squeeze, as if reminding himself that at least Ed is there with him. they're all they have left now, in this strange world, because both members of their family are gone. it's heartbreaking to think about. what if he was never brought here and Ed was left to suffer alone? he doesn't like thinking about it. ]

Maybe there's something we can do, Brother. To remember them all. Even Mom.

[Oh no, poor Edward] I've some engineering knowledge, but...what is auto-mail?

It's basically prosthetics, fake limbs. I have auto-mail for my right arm and left leg. They're made of metal and have cables that connect to the port and right to the nerves so I can pretty much move it the same as a normal flesh limb. I just want some kind of reassurance in case something happens with it. I can manage basic maintenance myself, but beyond that I really need someone else to look at it for repairs or anything.

[But uh. This is a baby. Or, appears to be. But Ed is more used to things being more than they appear, from experience here and back home. The homunculi don't appear to be hundreds of years old but they were, for example. If this kid thinks he might be able to help, Ed isn't about to turn down the offer.]

Hm. [Wow, this is all just incredibly fascinating.] I'm all right with delicate machinery [Because, lol, tiny fingers], but I'd have to get a closer look to make sure I can actually help.

[A beat] You're Edward Elric, aren't you. [It is not a question.]

I'm at the second Outpost, or I can come see you and you can check it over in person if you want.

...Yeah, that's me. [He's kind of used to being well-known back home so some stranger knowing his name is not too unheard of. He's just curious how this baby knows of him. He hasn't done anything too dangerous or anything here. Yet.]

[Identity established, Reborn moves on to the business at hand without a pause.] I'll meet you there. Did your...former mechanics leave any tools or specialized instruments behind? Or extra supplies, perhaps, if the parts are custom-made?

Okay. There might be some spares and stuff back in the mechanics. And I think Winry might have left some notes and tools. Chances are if there's anything we need the Door might be useful enough to bring it here. But I think it should be okay. I've been trying to be careful, just want to have some back up if it does get damaged, really.

Well, if a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well. It would not be ideal for things to come down to a crisis and then find that I wasn't able to fulfill it.

Right. Makes sense. I'll see you soon and be sure to check the mechanic workshop later. You sure you know where it is and all?
