I've been wondering, Scorched.

[ Arthur has been training since before the sun rose: it's visible in the flush across the bridge of his nose, the way his blond bangs are sticking dark to his temples, the slouch of his usually straight-backed posture. But he needs a break, a distraction from his own mind, from the questions that have been plaguing it without concrete answer. ]

Say that the Door started — temporarily — working the way that all doors should, and we could all trip merrily back to our own worlds.

[ A breath, considering whether he's really going to ask. Despite his slightly laconic tone, he knows how depressing some of the answers he'll get will be. But he still wants to know: ]

Would you stay here in Anatole?

Or would you go home?

[ She nods. ] It's the hellhole I was trapped in before I woke up here.

There's more than one place that traps people and prevents them from returning home?

Either that or I'm completely insane. [ Which is the common opinion of people here, she's sure. ]

That seems less likely.

What makes you say that?

Well, we've already found two Doors, and we know we don't all come from the same world but that lots of worlds have things in common. So that there's another world with a different sort of Door is practically a given.

Oh my god, I could kiss you right now or something. [ Except, you know. Forge. ] Everyone seems to think I'm completely insane even though being here is completely insane already and they've accepted that just fine. I don't get why the possibility of Atia existing and them being pulled there, too, is so hard to wrap their heads around.

Er— that won't be... necessary.

[ Whoops, flustered. ]

Everyone here is an idiot? Well, most people.

I wouldn't actually kiss you. I mean, I don't even know you. [ Not that that's ever stopped her before... Though she was usually at least buzzed when that happened. She can't make any promises about not hugging him, though, if this conversation were in person.

She laughs at that. ] That's definitely possible, yeah.

Then let me introduce myself.

... Not for, er, kissing purposes.

[ He clears his throat hurriedly. ]

I'm Arthur Pendragon. Vice Commander of the Alliance.

[ Grinning. So much grinning. ]

Fancy title. I'm Brooke Davis, of the Currently Unemployed But Looking For Work... Division, I guess. And I don't go around kissing people, strangers or not; it was just an expression.

My mistake.

And what talents do you have, Brooke? Any interest in combat or investigation?

Not really, no, but I can design some pretty amazing clothing. [ Or... could. She's still struggling on getting that specific skill set back. ] I was kinda hoping to try something new here, though. New prison, new life, you know?

I believe Ishida Uryuu sews clothing, and Renly Baratheon has an eye and an interest. And there's always a market for replication of whatever people find in Berends.

But what would you like to do?

[ Arthur knows everyone, maybe he should be an employment agent. ]

Ishida's here, too? [ Good god, is everyone from Atia here? ] And I have no idea what Berends is, but I don't do replications.

[ That question, though, is something she's been asking herself for the past few months. She still doesn't have an answer. ] I don't know, honestly. Designing's kinda been my dream for a while and I never really thought I'd need a backup.

Well, all right. The answer should probably be obvious, but are you the manual labour sort?

[ She doesn't look it, but then, Priscilla doesn't look like she can knock down buildings. Some lessons you learn. ]

If you've a green thumb there's the Greenhouses and the markets. If you're good at selling items there are plenty of shops, or you could find someone who makes something and get a stall together. There are charity organizations that try to pay a small salary, such as the Clinic or the soup kitchen. And if you simply need ivories I'm sure the Foxhole could do with waitstaff.

[ That's a lot of options and none of them really sound appealing, but she nods. ] One of those will work, at least for the time being. Not having money for food or a place to live kinda makes the surviving thing a little more difficult.

Honestly, Lady Davis, if I were you I'd join the Police Force or Search and Rescue. Joining the Alliance comes with room and board, and it can be a good intermediary measure. You could ask Riza Hawkeye for some gun training and Buffy Summers for some self-defense. Actually, that mightn't be a half bad idea regardless of where you end up working.

[ Her nose scrunches a bit at the mention of Buffy before she can stop herself. She wants to give this Buffy a chance, especially since she probably doesn't remember her either, but she can't really help but be irritated just by the thought of her. ]

I'll definitely think about it. I've already got a little gun training experience, too, so that'll probably help if I decide to talk to Riza. [ Which she probably will sooner rather than later, all things considered. ] I definitely appreciate the suggestions, though, even if I've never imagined myself as a cop. Or anything like that.

And you can just call me Brooke, Arthur. I don't mind.
